Local Resources

  • Finsens is a great resource for expats in Holland, offering advice on taxes, mortgages, investments, pensions and working with the Dutch authorities. Their office on Herengracht is set in a renovated canal house from the 16th century, I’m guessing. My advisor, Patricia van der Hut, is knowledgeable about Dutch/American expat financial situations and explains things well to right-brainers like me.

  • BBB: Pilates studios in the Jordaan and near the Amstel. Highly effective exercise classes for women. I’m in + out in less than an hour.

  1. I am interested in moving from LA to Amsterdam. Do you mind sharing a little more about how you managed to do it? Do you have a Euro passport or a Dutch company supporting you? Thank you for any information.

    • Hi Tina,
When I moved from Newport Beach to A’dam in 2010, I had 3 options for obtaining residency: 1. Marry a Dutchie (no thanks), 2. Do a job no Dutchie could do (highly unlikely; I’m theoretically retired with a passive income stream, although I still work for American employers who pay me in dollars, not euros…so it doesn’t count as income. 3. Apply as a eenmanszaak (sole proprietor), which I did, as I have a freelance business. I was required to submit a business plan and I’m still required to keep a 4500 euro balance in a Dutch business bank account. I still have an American passport, but can apply for dual citizenship now that I’ve lived here for 5 years. However, this requires an intermediate mastery of Dutch and I’m not there yet.

Hope this helps. My personal email is melissa@wordgeish.com, if you have other questions about moving here. I’ve had NO regrets!
